Wanna talk fair?

January 8, 2008

Talk about fair came up tonight as I looked at Joshua 11 with some guys. Try this one out for our measure of fair:

For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Joshua 11:20

This takes place in the context of the Israelites entering the land of Caanan to wipe out its inhabitants, claiming the land promised to them by the Lord. Surely this is not fair, right?

Well, even though I don’t necessarily like it, this is God’s justice being carried out. A couple of comments:
- I think Rahab (Joshua 6) serves as an example that the Caananites had the opportunity for repentance and redemption. There is not much written about it, so the argument continues. Could God have created a people for the sole purpose of being destroyed in order to bring Him glory? As He is the Sovereign of the universe, and I being part of that which is created, I answer yes. I understand it differently, however.
- I understand this as the same justice that is carried out in the end times, as many, many people will be destroyed. Now is the time for God’s mercy and grace, which brings repentance and redemption.

Very brief, I know, but I am tired…

It’s not fair!

January 8, 2008

“But…it’s not fair!”

“Fair is where you go to ride rides and eat corny dogs.”

I have heard this far too many times, maybe because far too many times I am the one complaining about the state of fairness. My latest complaint is with one of my profs from last semester. We are now 3+ weeks removed from the semester and he still has not graded the class work and submitted our grades. Actually, the class was over at the end of October, but he allowed us till December to turn in one assignment.

So, you want your grade? Yes. What is the rush? There isn’t one. Then why are you complaining that you don’t have your grade? Because grades are due. If I have to abide by deadlines in class then the prof should have to abide by deadlines. It is only fair that way. But really, there is no pressing reason to get your grade, you just want the prof to follow his deadline? Yes. And you will not be harmed if you don’t get your grade today, or tomorrow, or even at the end of the week. Well, I guess not. But that is not the point! See, he is not following the rules…

Why do I allow my mind to be consumed by such ridiculously menial things that don’t matter?!?!?!?!?!?!

I leave you with these excellent song lyrics:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
